Christian Acupuncture?
Every Christian knows that our Lord Jesus Christ was "pierced" for our sins and died for our iniquity (unrighteousness and unholiness).? It is an undeniable truth that God chose to present His son as a sacrifice so that we could live forever in His presence.? As I sit here working through the mechanics of the ancient art of acupuncture I'm stricken with an awareness that until we meet Him in person we'll have a very limited understanding of what He went through to buy us back from the devil.?
?
The art of acupuncture is very difficult to master and has many elements that fly in the face of Christian doctrine.? For instance, there are treatments that are called "Seven dragons to chase the seven internal devils (or demons)."? The fact is that these treatments have been designed to address internal medicine issues like infectious disease, emotional imbalances and toxicity.? The acupuncture?terminology is descriptive of the thinking?of the ancient?healers who hadn't had the opportunity to hear the "Good News" of the gospel, let alone incorporate these new ideas into their medical system.??Still, no one should blindly embrace acupuncture or any Eastern medical system because?of symptomatic benefit from their use.? Every healing event, including taking antibiotics and heart bypass surgery has a spiritual context.? You should be aware of the spiritual basis of your choices.? Outside of divinely inspired prayer, all medical systems have their basis outside of Christianity.
?
Hard to believe?? It shouldn't be.? There are no medical systems that are purely Christian in their founding or application.? The Biblical Guide to Alternative Medicine by Michael Jacobson D.O. and Dr. Neil Anderson makes this point well.? I recommend it for anyone who is seriously interested in alternative medicine and walking in the power of the Holy Spirit.? Jesus said "Do not believe every spirit!"? It would be wise to find out what this admonition really meant.? Trying the "spirit" requires specifically asking or investigating whether a spirit emanates from the One True God and Father of Jesus Christ.? A demonic spirit will deny the existence of God-made-flesh in the person of Jesus Christ and His resurrection and ascension to His place at the right hand of God.? Christian acupuncture may be possible in the future.? I'm certainly giving it a careful examination!? Until I know more about oriental medicine and its full spectrum of effects I know of only one episode of Christian acupuncture.? It happened around two thousand years ago when a Roman soldier pierced the side of my Lord and the Christian church was born.?
I want to add to your understanding of acupuncture. I am a chiropractor and have studied acupuncture for ten years. I use acupuncture very successfully in my clinic. I have several medical physician patients and several routinely refer patients to my clinic. I also offer rehab, PT, massage and other treatment.
I do not use acupuncture in the way it is described by many traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) or new age practitioners. The approach I use could be called "clinical acupuncture". I do not concern myself with the flow of chi and all the traditional concepts of TCM. Instead, I have developed very successful techniques utilizing acupuncture needles in modern physiologic perspective. In my clinic, we treat pain, neurological problems, joint problems and some other problems extremely successfuly. Most often the patient experiences a lasting relief that they have not found with any other approach. It is not placebo or of the occult, it is a physiological methodology that works with anatomical structures and neurological processes. I agree with your concern about new age drifting of the Christian's understanding of God and man, however, I have found that some people have become so polarized because of a limited understanding of modern use of acupuncture. Often they gain this information from sources such as the internet. Just as I would have a very distorted concept of Christianity if my sole source of information was the internet, this sort of "research" can lead to a skewed concept of the entire field of acupuncture. Many medical researchers are implementing acupuncture with no regard to TCM or Taoist origins. I wanted you to be aware that medical or clinical acupuncture is a reasonable methodology that is no more based on Taoist philosophy than ordering chinese take-out. Ever notice that most Chinese restaurants have a statue of Buddha? Many Chinese Americans are Buddhist. Does that make Chinese food bad for Christians?
I do understand what you are warning about, but also please understand that acupuncture is a clinical methodology that can be used irregardless of religious intentions. There have been many patients that have found relief from my treatments that had already tried multiple doctors and medicines with little success.
Veterinary doctors are using acupuncture successfully without concern of their animal patient's views of philosophy or religion.
This message is not intended to be offensive in any way, but to be illuminating of aspects of acupuncture that are not related to Taoist beliefs.
I am Christian that was raised in a devout Christian home and have several fundamentalist Christian pastors in my family. I too am concerned about new age influences, but am aware that some people are higly polarized and paint everything they are unfamilar with using the same brush of suspicion.
