In another foolish goverment-centric attempt at securing "health" for the entire population the latest legislation revolves around policing food consumption and activity. Because of the costs that are inherent in bloated bureaucracy it pressure builds for legislators and other government representatvies to show some kind of results for their spending. Governments regulate. Individuals innovate. Sociopaths manipulate. It is critical at this point in our national history and dialogue that we put the right people in government office.
Government should stay out of our pantries, play-time and personal choices. Regulating highways and military activities is very important and a just use of government authority and power. As government entities reach further and further into our personal choices we will soon enslaved to an elite bureaucracy that limits the very food we eat. Though prohibiting foods may seem far-fetched up until the past few years it would have been unthinkable that smoking would be outlawed from honky-tonks in Texas to pubs in old Ireland. The most important issue here is that government has to have a limited role in the lives of free people. When government is the alleged solution to any problem there better be very strong evidence to support the plan.
As a physician I see the impact that Medicare has had on our medical system. Underfunded and under pressure from an increasingly-taxed populace there is only one possible scapegoat for the doomed program - the people, including their doctors. Fraud prosecutions, rationing care to people at certain ages and total body weights and offering only low-quality health care are the first step in the steady erosion of excellence in medicine and the rest of our lives. In the 1930's there was the beginning of a movement that identified those that were unfit to be a part of a superior society. The Jews of Germany were selected as the easiest mark to allow increased government control. Soon, anyone (Jew or Gentile) who opposed the government was rounded up and shipped away to concentration camps to starve and die.
When the freedoms of any group can be removed for the "betterment" of society it is time to beware. Remember, they came for the Jews first. That group was relatively easy to identify and defame. We need to stand together or soon you might be doing "10-20" for that double cheeseburger.
