I have a 4-year-old autistic son and a 7-week-old daughter. I've recently been nervous about breastfeeding. I'm taking supplements -- fish oil, a B multi, chlorella and a mineral supplement in addition to my regular pre-natal. But I'm wondering if it would be safer to use formula so that I don't unknowingly p*#*#*# toxins on to my daughter. Dr. Mahoney?

Cindy,
Great question. If you have the opportunity to have your breast milk tested for heavy metals that would be a good method to be "absolutely" sure that you aren't creating a problem. I would ask your doctor to check with Doctor's Data or we could check for you at the Center for Hope and Healing if you wanted us to process your lab. Since you're taking chlorella I think you are on the right track to keep your amalgams "out of the picture." The benefits of breast milk far outweigh the risks in my opinion. Blessings on you and your little one,

Thanks, Dr. Jay! How expensive is it to have my breast milk tested?

You could call Doctor's Data and find out. We have never done that specific test but it shouldn't be hard to find out. You can find them at http://www.doctorsdata.com/home.asp. Just paste into your browser and off you go!
